How to Elope in Florida

If palm tree-lined streets and long walks on the beach are your idea of paradise, then the Sunshine State is the elopement destination for you. From big city Miami to charming St. Augustine, Florida elopement destinations are as varied as your relationship is unique. Wondering where to hold a small wedding in Florida? Unsure of how to get your Florida marriage license? Or looking for some of the best Florida elopement packages out there? This guide will cover all your questions when it comes to crafting a dream Florida elopement.

What are the best places to elope in Florida?

Florida is a big state, so whether you’re looking for a short and simple beach elopement or want to host an intimate, small wedding ceremony, there’s plenty to choose from. All of our favorite elopement locations in Florida offer beach venues, so deciding where to go depends more on your vibe as a couple and what you’re looking for from your experience.

If you love culture, nightlife, and glamor, then fast-paced, vibrant Miami is for you. Art deco buildings dot Miami Beach, open-air artwork fills the city, and restaurants serve up world-class food. In Miami, you can choose to say “I do” on the extraordinary 1920s era Deering Estate, in the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, or on the beach at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park.

If you’re drawn to Orlando for its theme parks and entertainment, then you may be surprised to learn it’s only an hour away from serene beaches! With NASA’s Space Center and more than 100 lakes spread throughout the surrounding area, there is something for everyone. For elopements, there’s the 50-acre Harry P. Leu Gardens dotted with 200-year-old oak trees, or the Mayan Courtyard, where art, history, and nature combine. You can’t go wrong with a sunset ceremony amongst the Greek columns of Kraft Azalea Park or an undeveloped stretch of shoreline on Playalinda Beach. This is an especially great elopement destination if you have kids in tow.

St. Augustine is ideal for couples who love small-town charm, history, and nature. Tranquil, shaded gardens are dispersed among centuries-old architecture, while cobbled streets share space with miles of unspoiled coast. A sunrise elopement on St. John’s Beach or an intimate wedding in Washington Oaks Gardens State Park are absolutely magical, while the Peña-Peck House Garden and Villa Zorayda Museum are unique venues unlike anything else out there.

If your temperament is more laid back and you’re hankering for an island getaway, then Key West is the Florida wedding destination for you. We love the Florida Keys for the tropical gardens and beaches, breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, and countless options for outdoor adventures. Whether you choose to elope on Smathers Beach, in the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden, at Bahia Honda State Park, or in the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservancy, your wedding day is going to be unforgettable.

What time of year should you elope in Florida?

Thanks to consistently warm temperatures and sunny skies, there’s really not a bad time to get married in Florida! December and January tend to be the coolest months, but they also see fewer crowds. The spring months are ideal for eloping, especially April and May as the days get longer and the weather warms—Spring Break in March can get a bit crazy. June is actually the rainiest month in Florida, while July and August mark peak tourist season (the crowds tend to disperse after Labor Day). Note that hurricane season in Florida begins in June and lasts about five months, so there’s always the chance of a storm rolling through in that timeframe.

What’s the best time of day to elope in Florida?

We recommend the hours around sunrise or before sunset for your Florida elopement. Sunrise on the beaches, most of which face east, are especially magical and have the added bonus of having fewer people around. Intimate weddings during the day increase the likelihood of others being around, unless you book a private venue. If you do go for a midday elopement, it’s worth ensuring your venue has ample shade.

What do your small wedding packages in Florida contain?

Our most affordable elopement package is “Seed,” which includes advice on ceremony location, a personalized wedding script, and an officiant to enact your ceremony. The next level up is “Sprout,” which has everything from the “Seed” package plus an hour of photography and a digital transfer of 75+ edited images. Add a nosegay bouquet and boutonniere of your choosing to that package and you get “Bloom.” Our top-tier “Oasis” package builds on that to include a ceremony coordinator, additional photography, hair and makeup for one person, and videography.

How much does it cost to elope in Florida?

If you’ve got your heart set on eloping in a warm climate near the beach, then Florida is a great, affordable option. With flights and accommodation significantly less than somewhere like Hawai’i, Florida offers a combined wedding, honeymoon, and vacation all rolled into one experience. Of course, if you want to stay at the Walt Disney World Resort or charter a couple of days on a catamaran in the Florida Keys, your costs are going to go up.

The elopement packages we offer range from $400 for a “Seed” ceremony to $1600 for “Bloom.” Our “Oasis” packages range from $2,500 (Miami) to $3225 (Orlando).

What do you need to get married in Florida?

To get your Florida marriage license you’ll need a driver’s license, state ID card, or valid passport, as well as your social security number if you’re a U.S. citizen (you don’t need the actual card). If you were previously married, you’ll also need to know the exact date your previous marriage was terminated (if it was due to death within the last six months, you’ll also need a copy of the death certificate). Once you have all your documents in order, couples are required to show up in person at the County Clerk’s office to verify information and obtain a license.

A Florida marriage license is good for any county in Florida, although once the marriage is solemnized, the license does have to be returned to the county that issued it. The cost of a Florida marriage license is $93.50 (for Florida residents, completing a marriage preparation course will earn you a $32.50 discount). Your license is good for 60 days and must be solemnized by an ordained or licensed clergy, notary public, or justice of the peace.

Can you get married the same day in Florida?

For couples from out of state, there is no waiting period in Florida and you can get married the same day you receive your license. For Florida residents, there’s a three-day delay. Couples can get the three-day waiting period waived (and earn a discount on their license) by completing a marriage preparation course.

Do you need witnesses to elope in Florida?

Florida doesn’t require witnesses, making it ideal for elopements!

Read the real stories of couples who eloped in Florida!

Every ceremony at Simply Eloped is unique because every couple is unique. Caran and Jesus embraced what was right for them and chose a ceremony that matched their style and personalities. Their tiny wedding on the shores of St. John’s Beach in St Augustine, Florida – accompanied by their fur babies and close friends & family – is a darling example of how special a small ceremony can be. Read more about how Caran and Jesus fell in love, got engaged and chose to elope in St Augustine with a darling beach wedding.

How did you meet? What was your first impression of each other?

Caran: I met Jesus at orientation for a local theme park in Orlando. He was easy to talk to and so bubbly but I was shy and not sure why this stranger was talking to me. We only talked for a few minutes that day but in that conversation we found out we would be working in the same department. We did not work together again for about and week and when he saw me he seemed so happy. We became fast friends after that. He was just so positive.

Jesus: We met at Orientation for work, I had come back from Visiting Family in Chicago after a bad beak up. She was really cute and looked a bit lost. I’m naturally shy but I just felt like: ‘I need to talk to this girl’ so after a bad joke we started chatting.

How did you fall in love? How did you know?

Caran: After a couple months working together, I put my number in his phone and we began texting all the time! I even had to teach him how to add emojis on his phone! We talked about everything and I loved his perspective and how funny he can be. After a few months of this, he texted asking if I wanted to go out with him and I told him to ask me in person. He did and we’ve been together ever since! I realized I loved him one night a few weeks later when we decided to make playlists for each other. The songs he had picked instantly put a smile on my face and I probably read too much into the lyrics but I remember thinking “wow, I think I love this guy.”

Jesus: We were sitting at a bar with some friends of ours and I looked over and saw the sun hitting her and it hit me like a brick wall. I knew then and there that I was going to marry that girl.

How did you propose or accept the proposal?

Caran: Jesus proposed December 13th in Chicago where he is from. We had been dating for 5 years at this time so getting engaged was definitely something we talked about. I was completely shocked with his timing though because I had just had a surgery and did not think we had the money. Little did I know he had set everything up months prior! He picked my engagement ring from a store based in Texas where I am from and I love that I get a piece of home to wear forever.

Jesus: I’d like to say I had it planned for months but it wasn’t until we got to Chicago that I picked the day and the place. I bought us tickets to walk through the Chicago Botanical Garden for their Christmas light display. While we walked through the Gardens I was looking at every area of the Garden looking for a private place to pop the question. No luck, I wasn’t sure how much Garden was left and I started to panic, then like out of a dream I saw a bench sitting under mistletoe. I found it! It was a photo opp. I convinced her to take a photo with me and oddly enough she agreed. I looked for someone to take out photo and saw a guy with a wedding ring and knew he was the man for the job, I told him what I was about to do and asked if he was up for it. He agreed and I proposed on the bench under the mistletoe. What we didn’t realize was that he didn’t just take a photo but recorded a video at the the same time. It was perfect.

What do you love about your partner?

Caran: I’m very lucky to have met Jesus. He is so caring and responsible and hardworking. He is old fashioned, like me, when it comes to our relationship. He is a great partner and always taking care of me. He is someone I know will be a wonderful father one day.

What is the greatest strength of your relationship?

Caran: I think the greasiest strength of our relationship is how determined we are. We are the type of people to not take no for an answer once we have decided to do something. We use this towards our relationship and have weathered many storms relying on each other.

Why did you decide to elope?

Caran: It was really important to us not to go into any debt for our wedding. I’m also pretty shy and could not imagine walking out to a big party of people. Once we found out you can elope with a small group of guests it just seemed like the perfect thing for us! An intimate wedding with our closest friends/family around us.

How did you find Simply Eloped?

Caran: I learned about Simply Eloped from a Reddit page on weddings. The reviews were so good and the website had locations we loved with packages that made sense to us.

How did you know Simply Eloped was the right fit for you?

Caran: After looking at what Simply Eloped offered and how customizable we could make our wedding it felt like a perfect fit and we booked our big day!

What attracted you to a St. Augustine elopement?

Caran: We chose to get married at the beach in St Augustine. We would frequent St Augustine a lot while we were dating and it became a very special place for our relationship. Once Simply Eloped added that location it felt meant to be!

What activities did you do before the wedding? How did you prepare? How did you feel leading up to the moments of your elopement?

Caran: We had our bachelor and bachelorette parties, we picked out our wedding outfits, had our cake tasting, and picked our honeymoon location.

Tell us about your experience with Simply Eloped leading up to and on your big day!

Caran: Working with Simply Eloped was very straightforward. It was easy to sign up for our package online and they reached out right away to match us with our officiant and photographer. They were quick to reply to emails and updated us as quickly as possible with updates.

How did you celebrate after?

Caran: After our wedding ceremony and pictures we celebrated with dinner, cake and champagne! We had our first dance and finished the night by playing loteria with all of our guests.

What words of encouragement do you have for those considering eloping?

Caran: Eloping can be whatever you want it to be! For us that meant including many aspects from a traditional wedding just on a smaller scale. With Simply Eloped they take the stress out of everything for you. At the end of the day your wedding is about you and your love, so do what makes you happy!

Genevieve & Glenn met at acupuncture school and were soon planning a future together. Their timeline was moved along by the struggles they faced together during the pandemic. They found Simply Eloped to help them plan a romantic elopement at Washington Oaks Garden State Park in St. Augustine. Genevieve & Glenn exchanged vows under the roof of the pavilion surrounded by gorgeous gardens and ponds. Afterward, they enjoyed lunch on the beach and champagne and cake. We love that this bride, who used to arrange events, knew that she wanted a stress-free elopement with Simply Eloped taking care of all the details. Read more about Genevieve getting Glenn’s attention in the first place and how their relationship spurred their choice to elope.

How did you meet? What was your first impression of one another?

Genevieve: We met our first year of acupuncture school! We sat near each other in anatomy class, which is hilarious in retrospect. I thought Glenn was really cute, and I batted my eyelashes at him quite a bit. He finally caught on.

Glenn: I thought Genevieve was beautiful, and then I started talking to her and found out she was pretty funny, too. Not to mention smart.

When did you first fall in love? How did you know?

Glenn: I wanted to be around Genevieve more and more and started thinking of us having a future together. I told her, “I love you” first.

Genevieve: I think I knew about three or four months into dating that I loved him, and he was a keeper. It was a turbulent time of my life, and he was steady with me through it.

How did you propose or accept the proposal?

Genevieve: We had talked about getting married since our first year of being together, and we had made a lot of plans for it. The pandemic changed everything. I moved in with Glenn a lot sooner than we had anticipated due to working remotely. We supported each other through a very challenging year between the pandemic and personal tragedies. We made it out alive, and we loved each other even more because of it. The struggles brought us closer. So we decided to get married sooner! I chose a few rings that I wanted, and he picked one out. Glenn proposed over a candlelit dinner of Chinese takeout. He talked a lot about how we just work well together, and I agreed with a “yes”!

What do you love about your partner?

Glenn: That she’s smart and caring. She’s good at talking about emotions and navigating difficult conversations. She’s also really hot.

Genevieve: He’s the stable earth and forest to my moody waters. He keeps me balanced. He’s logical and pretty stoic, but he’s also got this sweet, tender, sensitive side.

What is the greatest strength of your relationship?

Genevieve: We think about things pretty similarly. So when we do have disagreements, we’re able to understand the other’s perspective well. We’re also both very committed to each other. There is that sense of security that no matter what we fight about or what challenges we come across, we will see it through together.

Why did you decide to elope?

Glenn COVID, primarily. We wanted to have a wedding with close family, but we knew that it would be a struggle with restrictions in place across the country. However, we both wanted to travel (safely!), and Genevieve is a huge travel bug. We decided St. Augustine would be a beautiful place to elope.

How did you find Simply Eloped?

Genevieve: Google search, honestly!

How did you know Simply Eloped was the right fit for you?

Genevieve: I liked the idea of an all-in-one package. I used to help coordinate events, and I know the craziness that goes into them. I loved the idea of someone doing it all for me.

What attracted you to the venue you chose for your elopement?

Glenn: The history and architecture. Genevieve is half Spaniard, and St. Augustine reminded her of her second home in Spain.

What did you do before the wedding? How did you get ready? How did you feel in the moments leading up to your elopement?

Glenn: We packed, wrote out vows together, and made sure our wedding clothes fit. That was pretty much it! It was so easy just to pack a bag and leave town for a few days.

Genevieve: I was so nervous and excited. Moments before we were married, we just walked around Washington Oaks Park in awe of the flowers and trees. It felt right.

Tell us about your experience with Simply Eloped leading up to and on your big day!

Genevieve: It was great. The officiant was communicative, the photographer walked us through some great poses, and we love our photos.

How did you celebrate after your elopement?

Genevieve: We grabbed lunch by the beach and headed back to our Airbnb for our wedding cake and champagne!

What words of encouragement do you have for those considering eloping?

Genevieve: It’s much cheaper than your traditional wedding. It’s an amazing experience when you travel and make it into a honeymoon! If it aligns with your values, do it!
