Carmel River State Beach Permit Rules

What you need to know

  • We are required to have a Simply Eloped person on site – this can be an officiant, photographer, videographer or onsite helper (which means with our Orchid Package, you are required to add-on our onsite helper to have them on site).
  • Please stay in the designated location.
  • No alcohol is allowed.
  • No organic or non-organic materials are allowed to be spread such as rice, rose petals, or confetti. We will lose our permit if such materials are brought to the site!
  • No structures or sets may be constructed unless specifically provided for and described in writing: no digging or excavating is permitted: and no shrubbery or trees are to be cut, trimmed, or injured.
  • No additions, alterations, modifications, or decorations may be affixed to any Department of Parks and Recreation facility. NOTE:  No additions, alterations, modifications, decorations or fences may be affixed to any wall, building, post, or landscaping within California State Beach.
  • Vehicles should be parked in areas designated for vehicle parking.  All parking regulations are enforced.
  • All trash and any waste must be removed completely at the event’s conclusion.  Bring sufficient trash receptacles to contain all event-generated waste.  All trash receptacles provided by State Parks for general public use, located within 100 feet of the event, must be emptied of trash.
  • Maintain the permitted area in a clean and sanitary condition and restore the area to the condition in which it was received to the satisfaction of the State. Do not scatter any flower petals real or artificial or any other matter that does not occur naturally at the venue. Do not bring any invasive plant on to the beach. This includes Pampas and Fountain grass.
  • The volume of electronic equipment, speakers, or other devices used to amplify sound may not extend beyond the permitted area.
  • Fires are not permitted.
  • Not wheelchair accessible.
  • No bathrooms on-site.
  • Dogs are allowed only on-leash at all times.

General Beach Safety rules:

  • Never turn you back on the ocean
  • Stay above the berm line of steep beaches
  • Supervise your children at all times
  • Don’t play tag with the waves

If caught by the water at a steep beach like Carmel River State Beach (Monastery Beach):

  • Try to remain calm
  • Try to crawl out of the water on your hands and knees
  • If you are swept off your feet, try to swim short distance off shore, beyond the breaking waves
  • Signal for help by waving one hand or yelling
  • Tread water and wait for rescuers to arrive

If you witness somebody getting knocked into or struggling in the water:

  • Call 911
  • Don’t lose sight of the person in trouble
  • Wait for rescuers to arrive
  • Don’t attempt a rescue yourself
