What do you think makes eloping in Seattle so special?

The Seattle area is one of the few parts of the country surrounded by both mountains and water. As a native Texan, I’m constantly amazed by the Pacific Northwest. Our city has quick access to lush evergreen forests, epic mountain ranges, and more inlets, bays, and harbors than you can count.

What’s a fun fact about you?

I’m really passionate about animal rescue and spend my free time fostering shelter dogs brought in from California and Texas.

Tell us about one of your most magical elopements in Seattle!

I was enthralled as I traveled a short path with my bridal couple we turned a corner into a hidden enclave that was completely enveloped within a mini glade of shades of green, complete with a pond and secret stone stairs leading to a hidden alcove. It was one of the most beautiful locations I had ever seen, and thought any moment we would see a fairy among us.

How to elope in Seattle

A city plucked from the pages of a fairytale, Seattle is a dream of an elopement location. The city’s seasonal rains maintain its mossy forests, pristine lakes, and thousands of acres of parks — and give it its nickname: the Emerald City. Located on Puget Sound in the Pacific Northwest, Seattle is a great green city surrounded on all sides by nature. From heaving waterfalls to the rugged coastline and awe-inspiring snow capped mountain ranges, Washington State has no shortage of beautiful backdrops for your special day. Mount Rainier, the Cascade Range, and Olympic National Park are all located less than a few hours’ drive from the city.

Washington’s largest city, Seattle is a buzzy tech hub and coffee-lovers heaven. Steeped in history and food-obsessed — with an arresting balance of industry and landscape and a daring sense of adventure — the city checks a lot of boxes. Read on to discover the perfect park for your elopement, how to apply for a Washington marriage certificate, and how much eloping in Seattle might cost you.

What time of your should I elope in Seattle?

Seattle is a city for those of us prepared to throw our heads back and dance in the rain. During the wettest season of November to January, it is likely to be raining more often than not. For ski bunnies, this is great news: ´tis the season to head out of the city center and into the mountains if you’re in search of fresh powder. It’s also the best time to spot orcas on the Sound. July and August are the warmest and driest months of the year in Seattle. It rarely jumps above the mid-70s during the daytime and it typically rains on average just five days per month. Peak fall foliage dates will vary by year and location, but your best bet to enjoy the changing of the leaves is usually between mid-September and mid-October.

How do I legally elope in Seattle?

The cost of applying for a marriage license in the state of Washington varies by county. The application fee typically costs around $60 with an added certified copy fee of $3. Once you’ve obtained your marriage license, it is valid for 60 days and there is a three-day waiting period that you can spend exploring Seattle’s sights. In addition to an officiant, you will need two adult witnesses.

Where can I elope in Seattle?

What could be more scenic and unique than to elope on a Washington State Ferry ride from Seattle to one of Puget Sound’s many stunning islands? Simply hope aboard with your officiant and you’re off! Since these picturesque boats are open to the public, we would suggest that you stick to smaller parties for any non-commuter sailings.

About two hours driving from the city center, Mount Baker Wilderness a 120,000-acre wilderness area within the western Cascade Range of northern Washington. It is absolutely stunning and an all-time favorite location of our local insiders. For the adventurous, you’ll explore remote mountain trails on your way to the top, all the while soaking up the views of the surrounding alpine lakes and mountains before saying your vows at the summit.

If you’re planning on bringing many of your nearest and dearest, you can’t go wrong with the exposed wooden beams of Sole Repair Shop in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. A former shoe factory, Sole Repair Shop is an intoxicating blend of old and new, and the private event space can accommodate upwards of 150 guests.

How much does it cost to elope in Seattle?

If you’re thinking about eloping in Seattle, you should be conscious of the fact that the costs here are certainly higher than the average city. There are affordable options for outdoor venues, accommodations, and a taste of the city’s exciting food scene if you plan well in advance and choose your dates wisely. The absolute cheapest time to visit Seattle is typically mid to late September.

We’ve thought of everything — our Seattle elopement packages include everything you’ll need to have a memorable and adventurous day. Our Seattle elopement packages range from $420 for a simple ceremony to $2,550 for our high-end package. We also offer a Wildflower Experience Package for $3,500 in Seattle, which includes tailored location, time, and outfit suggestions, a custom itinerary to multiple locations anywhere in Washington state with a personal guide, four hours of photography, and an intimate ceremony. This is a great option for anyone looking for a natural park elopement or photos at multiple scenic spots.

The average hotel price in Seattle for a couple hovers around $189. If you’re aiming to be on the cost-conscious side, forget the hotels and find an Airbnb. When budgeting, you’ll also want to account for the cost of the permit if you’re eloping in a natural park or other outdoor space. If you’d like a ceremony coordinator to make sure your hair stays put and your vows are in hand, we can arrange one for $415.

Read the real stories of couples who eloped in Seattle!

Kendall + Joshua

Kendall admits that she had to do some serious flirting to get Josh’s attention! Joshua got on board pretty quickly and proposed on a sunset beach in Maui. This couple had to deal with Covid-19 interrupting their wedding plans in New Orleans. No matter! They found a private park in their hometown of Seattle overlooking the ocean with the mountain peaks behind. Kendall & Josh were not going to let anything get in the way of celebrating their love. So, with family by their side, they eloped in the sunshine and took their photos on the beach. We are so happy this couple was finally able to tie the knot with Simply Eloped! Did we mention that we love their first look? Be sure to check it out!

How did you meet? What was your first impression of one another?

Kendall: We met on my first day of work at a local restaurant. Josh worked in the bar, and, cheesy as it sounds when I met him, I knew! It took some aggressive flirting on my part, but eventually, he came around!

How did you propose or accept the proposal?

Josh: I proposed in Maui at sunset on the beach outside the hotel. She had no idea the ring was in her snorkel bag in her suitcase the entire time!

Kendall: I don’t even remember what I said, but it was obviously yes! A sea turtle was “watching” our proposal, so Josh got a spontaneous sea turtle tattoo before we flew home!

Where did you choose to elope, and why did you choose that destination?

Kendall: We originally planned on eloping in New Orleans, but when the pandemic just kept going, we switched to Seattle, where we live. We had a tough time finding a location that would allow more than five people to gather at once – and having our parents and my brother was a non-negotiable. I ended up having a co-worker offer the private park and beach included in her HOA – she saved the day!

What attracted you to the venue you chose for your elopement? What were your favorite parts about eloping there?

Josh: It’s a quintessential Seattle spot – water and mountain views all at the same time! We loved how quiet the park was and that a few steps away, we had the beach for photos – it looks like we went to an entirely different location!

How would you describe your elopement venue to someone who has never been there?

Kendall & Joshua: It’s a private park, so, unfortunately, you’d need the keys to go – but on entering the gate, there’s a massive grass park with a gorgeous view of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains range and beautiful landscaping. Through another gate, you’ll find beach access complete with tide pools and driftwood.

What did you do before the wedding? How did you get ready? How did you feel in the moments leading up to your elopement?

Kendall: We stayed at the Fairmont Olympic hotel the night before and just did a bit of wandering around Downtown Seattle during the day. We wanted to spend some time together and relax. When we went to dinner that night, our server happened to be someone we worked with when we first started dating! It definitely felt like a full circle moment!

Josh: The day of, we had breakfast at the hotel (though neither of us ate much – we were a little nervous!), and I went to lunch with my dad and Kendall’s dad and brother. Afterward, we then got ready together in my parent’s room.

Kendall: My mom, Josh’s mom, and I had our hair and makeup done together in our room. I was definitely getting the excited nerves by this point – I even tried sending a few work emails just to distract myself a little!

How was your experience with Simply Eloped?

Kendall & Joshua: Our officiant and photographer were fantastic and definitely the highlight for us!

How did you choose to celebrate your elopement?

Josh: We went to dinner as a family at a beautiful and delicious waterfront restaurant. We had a private room, so it was great to be able to celebrate together without distractions.

Kendall: The next morning, we went for brunch as a family, and then Josh and I bar-hopped in Seattle together! The weather was perfect, so we took advantage of all the patios!

What words of encouragement do you have for those considering eloping?

Kendall: We felt so much less stress on our wedding day and truly felt able to enjoy and cherish every moment. We didn’t need to visit with or entertain guests. We were just together on our big day.

Josh: What she said!
