From its sprawling farmlands and undeveloped beaches to its museums and mansions, Georgia runs the gamut when it comes to elopement destinations. Whether you’re keen on the glitzy Atlanta skyline, the rolling mountains to the north, or the southern comfort of Savannah’s cobbled streets, Georgia is home to some of the best places to elope east of the Mississippi River.
From the rapids of the Chattahoochee River in Columbus to the rugged Appalachian Trail, this southeastern state is traversed by a wide variety of landscapes and nearly 50 delightful state parks. The Peach State is also steeped in history. Retrace the steps of the country’s most notable civil rights leaders or admire the 18th and 19th-century architecture of Savannah, Georgia’s first city.
While winters in the lower altitudes are cool and rainy in parts, summers are infamously hot, muggy, and plagued by the occasional warm weather thunderstorm. Accommodations are at their most expensive during the summer season, to boot. The mildest months to visit Georgia are from March to May. Note that temperatures will vary across the state, from the mountains in the north to the Georgian coastline.

Georgia on the whole is a fairly affordable elopement destination. Some larger cities are more expensive than others. The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport is one of the more expensive airports in the US. However, a trip to Georgia for two people for one week costs on average $1,800. For comparison, that is half the price of a week on Oahu.

There is no waiting period in Georgia, so you can get married on the same day as you apply. If one of the applicants is a state resident, you can apply for your marriage license in any county Probate Court in Georgia. Both parties must go in person and bring a form of identification. If neither of you is a resident, you will simply need to apply in the county where your marriage will take place. You will need two witnesses to preside over your elopement ceremony.
