How to elope in Savannah

Old world charm and history go hand in hand in the gorgeous coastal city of Savannah. With its cobblestone streets, quaint squares, and historic architecture, Savannah is truly something of a hidden gem for your elopement. If you’re sold on a Savannah elopement, we’ll walk you through how to plan your big day.

Can I get married in a Savannah, GA wedding chapel?

The short answer: Yes! Quaint squares and Spanish moss make Savannah the perfect place to elope to – it’s dripping with historic southern charm! And, if you like to keep things traditional, consider having your ceremony in one of the wedding chapels in Savannah, GA.

While there are only a few chapels in Savannah, GA, you can’t go wrong with either one you choose. Whether you’re looking into the century-old Whitefield chapel or the coastal Tybee Island Wedding Chapel, these Savannah GA wedding chapels both offer a unique, romantic place to tie the knot.

Where else can I have my Savannah destination wedding?

Savannah is an iconic city with perfect locations for a wedding ceremony every way you look. Romantic squares, historic homes and a sprawling shoreline are all beautiful options for an intimate wedding day! Whether you’re looking to elope to Savannah for an epic outdoor ceremony in one of its parks or squares or having a simple justice of the peace Savannah GA wedding, we can help make your day unforgettable.

How to legalize your Savannah elopement

Eloping in Savannah is a simple process and only requires a few legal steps. If you’re dreaming of a romantic Savannah elopement, you’ll need to both arrive at the County Courthouse to apply for your marriage license and present valid identification. You’ll need to pay a fee of $66. Once you’ve received your license, there is no waiting period to get married – which means that once you receive your license, you can get married the very same day! To learn more about how you can obtain your marriage license for your Savannah elopement, you can visit the Chatham County website.

When is the best time of year to elope to Savannah?

Savannah has gorgeous, historic beauty year-round, but depending on your temperature preferences, you may want to choose your elopement date by figuring out first what season is best for you. With mild winter temperatures, Savannah is the perfect place to have a winter ceremony if you’re not looking for a winter wonderland of snow or extreme cold! Spring and fall tend to boast beautiful and generally mild temperatures, but it might be worth noting that some months during the fall and spring season can feel like summer! If heat and humidity are both climates that you want to avoid, we recommend skipping the summer season, as temps can go past 90 degrees and the humidity can be well past 75%! Overall, it entirely depends on what kind of climate you envision for your big day. Once that’s nailed down, choosing a season will be much simpler!

Read the stories of real couples that eloped in Savannah!

If live oak trees with Spanish moss and quaint Victorian townhomes are your idea of the perfect ceremony backdrop, then you may want to consider a Savannah elopement like Vanessa and Brian! And having a Forsyth Park wedding or elopement is the perfect destination to do so: the park is filled with lush greenery, an iconic fountain, and colorful homes dotted along the park’s outskirts, meaning your Savannah elopement will have the southern charm you’re wanting for your day. After Vanessa and Brian realized planning a wedding amidst the current pandemic was simply not an option they’d want to go through with, the couple eloped on May 20, 2020 at Forsyth Park, then headed back to the beautiful Alida Hotel to capture some more intimate post-ceremony portraits. Scroll below to read their love story and to check out the incredible photos that were captured that day!

How did you meet? What was your first impression of one another?

We met in the Atlanta airport about 2.5 years ago. I was headed to work (I am a flight attendant) and he was going to visit family. I thought he was handsome, but I didn’t take him seriously, and so the friend zone it became. My first impression of him was that he was quiet, and he is actually nothing like my first impression of him. Brian’s first impression of me was that I was funny, outgoing, and had a beautiful smile.

When did you first fall in love? How did you know?

Brian had to travel to East Africa for work and was there for four months. Before he left he surprised me with four months worth of cards for me to open while he was gone. Some of the cards were romantic, some were for if I had a bad day, and some were just thinking of you cards. His dedication to preserve the relationship during his time away convinced me that his love was here to stay. Brian first fell in love with me the day after Christmas later that year. He said that the time apart earlier that year made him realize how strong his feelings were for me. He first told me he loved me the day after Christmas that year.

How did you propose or accept the proposal?

Brian proposed to me at a coffee shop in the small town where he was working for the last few years. We had discussed marriage for a while, but of course his proposal caught me off guard (in a great kind of way).

What do you love about your partner?

I first fell in love with Brian’s commitment to consistency. I love his loyalty, intelligence, curiosity, and open-mindedness. Brian says he loves my affectionate nature for him, loyalty, and most of all he says I make him a better person, man, and husband.

What is the greatest strength of your relationship?

The greatest strength of our relationship is our ability to openly communicate with each other without fear.

How did you find Simply Eloped?

I found Simply Eloped online after exhaustive research. Simply Eloped’s style matched ours perfectly.

How did you know Simply Eloped was the right fit for you?

We knew we liked Simply Eloped based the packages they provide, professionalism, and prompt communication. Another selling point was the edgy and sophisticated style of their photography. Flexibility is important and the Simply Eloped team were more than happy to improvise if need be.

What attracted you to the venue you eloped at?

We chose Savannah because of incredible scenery and it’s proximity to where we live. There were a number of locations to choose from but Forsyth Park in our opinion was the most beautiful.

What activities did you do before the wedding? How did you prepare? How did you feel leading up to the moments of your elopement?

We stayed at The Alida Hotel in Savannah. Brian had told the manager we were going to get married and she delightfully upgraded our room to a beautiful suite. We chose to stay in and enjoy our wedding morning together. It was raining all morning so we were a bit concerned that the wedding would be rained out. Right before it was time to leave the hotel the clouds disappeared and the sun came out. We both had feelings of happiness, anticipation, and relief that the sun would shine down on us on our perfect day.

Tell us about your experience with Simply Eloped leading up to and on your big day!

The entire team at Simply Eloped was communicative, professional, and warm. They made our experience absolutely unforgettable. We’d like to give shout outs to photographer Karen Norian, officiant Melissa DeLynn, and Simply Eloped’s Roni, Laura, and Janessa. This is what all customer service should look like.

How did you celebrate after?

Champagne, champagne, champagne!!!

What words of encouragement do you have for those considering eloping?

Eloping is a personal choice. People who truly love and support you, will honor how you choose to get married. Marriage is about love and commitment and eloping is an incredibly intimate way to celebrate that union. We would choose an elopement again and again if we could! It was the best decision ever.

Why did you decide to elope?

The thought of eloping was always enticing because of logistics. We both have big families whom we are both very close with that live all over the world. It was a bit intimidating to attempt to plan a wedding that could bring everyone together….especially now with the current pandemic. We became increasingly unsure of when we would ever get to bring everyone together and where we would be able to do this. Also eloping provided us with the intimate setting that better suits our personalities.

It was the start of a beautiful thing when Kacie & Taylor met – they both thought they looked better in person than in their dating app photos! There was instant chemistry! Long story short, they decided they would rather invest in a new home together than an expensive wedding. That’s when they found Simply Eloped who helped them have a perfect elopement in Savannah, Georgia. Kacie had an epic wedding gown as she and Tyler eloped in beautiful Chippewa Square. Their families watched as they exchanged their vows under the trees and then celebrated with champagne. Read more to find out how Kacie & Taylor got engaged and decided on Simply Eloped to help them plan their elopement.

How did you meet? What was your first impression of one another?

Kacie: We met on a dating app. My first impression was that he did NOT look at all like his picture. He looked so much better!

Taylor: Damn!

When did you first fall in love? How did you know?

Kacie: We fell for each other pretty quickly. I knew it was love when I always wanted him to have the last bite or the better view or the best piece of pizza. I realized that I thought about his needs first, automatically.

Taylor: For me it was while we were sitting in the woods the first time we went camping. We were talking, laughing…and falling in love.

How did you propose or accept the proposal?

Kacie: We took a  trip to New Orleans. The whole first night he couldn’t sleep. He woke me up so early to go for a walk in a seaside park. After we reached the end of the pier, I laid my head on his chest and pulled back saying, “Babe, your heart is beating SO fast, you need to up your cardio game”. I looked over only to see him down on one knee. I breathed in and forgot to breath out before realizing I had not yet said ‘yes’. I thought it was implied!

What do you love about your partner?

Kacie: I love how funny, weird and smart he is. I love how he loves me so much that it makes me love him more. I love that he never wants me to be anything except exactly who I am. He is pretty easy on the eyes, too!

Taylor: I love her personality and brains, the way she thinks and the way we work through things together as a team. I love everything about her.

What is the greatest strength of your relationship?

Kacie: Our team. We are truly a team that wins together. It is never me versus him. It is always us vs a problem.

Taylor: Definitely our communication.

Why did you decide to elope?

Kacie: We wanted our day to be about us. Not about the stress of planning or throwing some expensive party we wouldn’t even get a chance to enjoy. We just bought the most amazing house that we are making a home for ourselves. I am so glad our money went to that instead of some expensive one time event that would take months to plan and be so quickly over.

How did you find Simply Eloped?

Kacie: A google search confirmed that Simply Eloped was the best. It had the best reviews and vendors that they had vetted. We wouldn’t have to do a ton of our own research.

How did you know Simply Eloped was the right fit for you?

Kacie: We actually found both the officiant and photographer on Instagram, and after several in depth stalking sessions, I was sure they were the right fit for us.

What attracted you to the venue you eloped at?

Kacie: It was close enough to be an easy trip for our parents, but far enough that our friends wouldn’t be expecting an invite! Plus, Savannah is just a beautiful backdrop for an elopement.

What did you do before the wedding? How did you get ready? How did you feel in the moments leading up to your elopement?

Kacie: We took more time planning the honeymoon. We were so excited to take a trip and explore Savannah. The wedding itself sort of snuck on us! We didn’t think we would be so nervous, but the hour before took a lifetime!

Tell us about your experience with Simply Eloped leading up to and on your big day!

Kacie: It was amazing. The vendors all stayed in constant contact with us to help us get there. They both performed so beautifully – Melissa and Karen were just magic. I can’t even imagine another person having done all that they did. They made it perfect for us.

How did you celebrate after your elopement?

Kacie: We had a great family dinner and then spent the next week in a cabin in the woods. We were feeling very thankful we hadn’t listened to everyone who tried to talk us into a big, elaborate wedding.

What words of encouragement do you have for those considering eloping?

Kacie: Go for it! Everyone I know who has eloped has said it feels so much more intimate and special. Most people who have the big event don’t get to enjoy it the way they want and the cost is astronomical. Also, go for the big dress and the exciting suit. It might be an elopement but it’s still your day and you should feel fabulous!!

Natasha & Dinko met as workmates and clicked immediately. They soon realized that nothing else mattered when they were together and they became partners in life. They also knew they did not want a large wedding and dreamed of tying the knot under the mossy trees of Pulaski Square in Savannah. They found Simply Eloped online and immediately loved that they could hand over all the hard work to a team of experienced professionals! Read more on their story about how they fell in love, when they ‘knew’ and why they chose to elope in Georgia.

How did you meet? What was your first impression of one another?

Natasha: We met while working at Little Caesars Pizza during college. We were very good friends at first but we clicked immediately and naturally.

When did you first fall in love? How did you know?

Natasha: We helped each other through some difficult times in our lives and quickly realized nothing else mattered when we were together. He first told me he loved me on NYE about a month after we started dating. At that moment, I did not know if he was talking to me or his dog!! I went ahead and said it back anyway because I knew I loved him. He was, in fact, talking to me!

How did you accept the proposal?

Natasha: Dinko proposed at a corn maze during the fall, which is our favorite time of the year. He ran ahead of me and, when I turned the corner, he was on his knees. I jumped on him and knocked him to the ground!

What do you love about your partner?

Natasha: He is the kindest, most considerate person I know. We laugh constantly and can make even a trip to the grocery store fun.

What is the greatest strength of your relationship?

Natasha: We root for each other always and are truly partners in life.

Why did you decide to elope?

Natasha: We did not want to have a large wedding and absolutely did not want to spend the money.

How did you find Simply Eloped?

Natasha: I googled ‘elopements’ in Savannah, Georgia.

How did you know Simply Eloped was the right fit for you?

Natasha: The reviews were great and included everything I wanted in a wedding – for the right price.

What attracted you to the venue you eloped at?

Natasha: Dinko and I visit Savannah every year and we love it. I had always wanted to get married there but thought it would be too difficult to arrange. But then I found Simply Eloped! We chose to wed at Pulaski Square, instead of Forsyth Park, so it would be more intimate.

What activities did you do before the wedding? How did you prepare? How did you feel leading up to the moments of your elopement?

Natasha: The day of the wedding, Pink Chique arrived to do my hair and makeup, which turned out exactly as I had wanted. Afterwards, Dinko and I just hung out in the hotel room and watched The Office until it was time to leave. Traffic was CRAZY and it took almost thirty minutes to get the five minutes from the hotel to the Square which added to our nerves. However, we made it on time and everything turned out perfectly.

Tell us about your experience with Simply Eloped leading up to and on your big day!

Natasha: Simply Eloped was so easy to work with and quick to answer any questions. I was amazed at their ability to read me and know exactly how to make our wedding absolutely perfect!

How did you celebrate after?

Natasha: After the ceremony, Dinko and I left everyone to take pictures which was so much fun and intimate. Then we went to River Street for dinner with our family and, afterwards, to a few bars to celebrate.

What words of encouragement do you have for those considering eloping?

Natasha: I feel that eloping made our wedding so special in that it was so intimate. We were really able to focus on the fact that this was about our love and nothing else. Everything was perfect and it was a dream come true to get married under the mossy trees in Savannah. Simply Eloped handled everything and took away so much of the stress that comes with planning a wedding.
